the international

I first saw the pattern for this shawl while on holiday in Cadiz. It’s designed by Susie Haumann and is called Dubai, after the woven Middle Eastern kufiya fabric it replicates in knitting. I made it during another holiday, this time in Fez on the other side of the Straits of Gibraltar (where we also bought the beautiful old carpet offering a sort of faded chocolate-box photo opportunity for a shot of our cat, Maud). I translated the pattern from Danish (thanks Google!) and knitted the shawl in German Austermann merino lace yarn, now discontinued but bought then from the wonderful Meadow Yarn in England. All the patterns in Around, the collection that contains Dubai, are named after cities across the world so it seems fitting that my shawl has, quite coincidentally, an equally international heritage.
